Wildlife Resources Agency's (TWRA) Wildlife Management Areas
TWRA owns several tracts along the creek. Hunting is generally
allowed on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays during hunting season. For
more information, call TWRA at 1-800-262-6704. NCCC periodically schedules
guided hikes for bird-watching and other environmental education purposes.
TWRA's
Varner Tract
Take Highway 153 to Hamill Road. Turn onto Hamill Road at the traffic light and go
past Memorial North Park Hospital. Cross the North Chickamauga
Creek bridge, and turn left onto Cassandra Smith Road. Go about one mile and turn
left into a gravel driveway that runs between two houses and is across from
the North Hixson Church of God. The driveway leads to a small parking area
near the western boundary of the 128-acre tract.
TWRA's
Vandergriff Tract
Take 153 to the Hixson Pike interchange, and go north on Hixson
Pike. Turn left at the Adams Road/Wilbanks Drive traffic light (near the
Hixson Bi-Lo). Turn left onto Old Hixson Pike, go across the railroad
tracks, and immediately turn right onto Grubb Road. Turn right onto Mill Road. Go 2/10 of a mile and turn
right into a driveway just past a house with a chain-link fence. Follow the
driveway across the railroad track and turn right at the fork, going past a
block building. A trail from the parking area leads north into the 189-acre
tract.

North
Chickamauga Creek Greenway
Two hundred twenty (220) acres managed by the City of Chattanooga
includes 2 miles of hiking/bicycling trail, 3 canoe access points, a picnic
pavilion, and restrooms. Included within this acreage is the 180-acre
Greenway Farm.
Directions: Take Hwy. 153 to the Lake Resort Drive/Access
Road exit on the north side of Chickamauga Dam. Turn onto
Lake Resort Drive and the entrance to the
Greenway will be on your left opposite the parking area at the dam.

Greenway
Farm
The City's OutVenture program is based at the Greenway Farm, and
acts as a clearinghouse of outdoor information for the Tennessee Valley. The Greenway Farm also has
a facility for civic and social gatherings.
Directions: Take Hwy. 153 North. At the
second traffic light past the Chickamauga Dam, turn right onto Hamill Road and go past the
hospital. Follow Hamill Road to just over the North
Chickamauga Creek bridge and turn to the right across from the entrance to Bethel Bible Village.

Bowater's North
Chickamauga Pocket Wilderness
Bowater has designated 1,095 acres of its holdings in the North
Chickamauga Creek Gorge as a "Pocket Wilderness Area" and has
developed 1.5-mile and 4.5-mile hiking trails for public use.
Directions: Take U.S.
Hwy. 27 North to the Thrasher Pike exit. Turn left on Thrasher Pike, and
then turn right onto Dayton Pike. Follow Dayton Pike, go across the bridge,
and turn left at the traffic light onto Montlake Road. The Pocket Wilderness entrance will be about a mile ahead on
the left.
TVA's Big Ridge Small Wild Area
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has designated over 200 acres
of its Chickamauga Reservation, adjoining the Greenway and Greenway Farm,
for protection as a Small Wild Area. The area has been registered as a
State Natural Area and has been designated as an "Urban Wildlife
Sanctuary" by the National Institute for Urban Wildlife. A 1.3-mile
nature trail, which links with the paved greenway trail along the creek,
has been developed within the Small Wild Area by Boy Scout Troop 223.
