Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency's (TWRA)  Wildlife Management Areas
TWRA owns several tracts along the creek. Hunting is generally allowed on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays during hunting season. For more information, call TWRA at 1-800-262-6704. NCCC periodically schedules guided hikes for bird-watching and other environmental education purposes.

TWRA's Varner Tract
Take Highway
153 to Hamill Road. Turn onto Hamill Road at the traffic light and go past Memorial North Park Hospital. Cross the North Chickamauga Creek bridge, and turn left onto Cassandra Smith Road. Go about one mile and turn left into a gravel driveway that runs between two houses and is across from the North Hixson Church of God. The driveway leads to a small parking area near the western boundary of the 128-acre tract.

TWRA's Vandergriff Tract
Take 153 to the Hixson Pike interchange, and go north on Hixson Pike. Turn left at the
Adams Road/Wilbanks Drive traffic light (near the Hixson Bi-Lo). Turn left onto Old Hixson Pike, go across the railroad tracks, and immediately turn right onto Grubb Road. Turn right onto Mill Road. Go 2/10 of a mile and turn right into a driveway just past a house with a chain-link fence. Follow the driveway across the railroad track and turn right at the fork, going past a block building. A trail from the parking area leads north into the 189-acre tract.

Since 1989, more than 6,000 acres have come under some form of protection in the North Chickamauga Creek area. Trails within the following areas are open for public use:

North Chickamauga Creek Greenway
Two hundred twenty (220) acres managed by the City of Chattanooga includes 2 miles of hiking/bicycling trail, 3 canoe access points, a picnic pavilion, and restrooms. Included within this acreage is the 180-acre Greenway Farm.

Directions: Take Hwy. 153 to the Lake Resort Drive/Access Road exit on the north side of Chickamauga Dam. Turn onto Lake Resort Drive and the entrance to the Greenway will be on your left opposite the parking area at the dam.

Greenway Farm
The City's OutVenture program is based at the Greenway Farm, and acts as a clearinghouse of outdoor information for the
Tennessee Valley. The Greenway Farm also has a facility for civic and social gatherings.

Directions: Take Hwy. 153 North. At the second traffic light past the Chickamauga Dam, turn right onto Hamill Road and go past the hospital.  Follow Hamill Road to just over the North Chickamauga Creek bridge and turn to the right across from the entrance to Bethel Bible Village.

Bowater's North Chickamauga Pocket Wilderness
Bowater has designated 1,095 acres of its holdings in the North Chickamauga Creek Gorge as a "Pocket Wilderness Area" and has developed 1.5-mile and 4.5-mile hiking trails for public use.

Directions: Take U.S. Hwy. 27 North to the Thrasher Pike exit. Turn left on Thrasher Pike, and then turn right onto Dayton Pike. Follow Dayton Pike, go across the bridge, and turn left at the traffic light onto Montlake Road. The Pocket Wilderness entrance will be about a mile ahead on the left.

TVA's Big Ridge Small Wild Area
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has designated over 200 acres of its Chickamauga Reservation, adjoining the Greenway and Greenway Farm, for protection as a Small Wild Area. The area has been registered as a State Natural Area and has been designated as an "Urban Wildlife Sanctuary" by the National Institute for Urban Wildlife. A 1.3-mile nature trail, which links with the paved greenway trail along the creek, has been developed within the Small Wild Area by Boy Scout Troop 223.
