Problems in hiding
Look closely and one will see two major environmental problems in this photo. The first is the orange coloring on the rocks in the top photo which indicates acid mine drainage from an abandoned coal mine upstream.
The second problem is the little white spots on the Hemlock Branches. These little white spots are actually a little bug from Asia that is wreaking havoc on the Hemlocks, threatening their existence. I found this on the second stand of Hemlocks I saw this morning off the Cumberland Trail near the Blue Hole.
If you see any Wooly Adelgid while in the gorge, please let us know by emailing a picture and its location to email@example.com.
