Erosion Control

Coir logs are 100% natural and biodegradable logs filled with coconut husk. They are used in erosion control because the water can pass right through them but the sediment is stopped and builds up behind it. Once the soil builds up, land establishment is created and plants can naturally invade the area creating more soil stability, thus restoring the habitat. This erosion control and restoration effort has been done in the North Chickamauga Gorge State Natural Area at the Barker Camp trailhead by volunteer groups.
