Q: Will all the transition areas be accessible?
A: No. T1, the transition from the cycling leg to the paddling leg, will be
fully accessible before the race. T2, the transition from the paddling leg
to the running leg, will not be accessible before the race. Therefore, any
items needed during the running leg of the race will have to be taken with
you on the canoes. See
race map for the location of T1 and T2.
Q: What are the special tests and "mystery events"?
A: Well, we can't reveal too much about them or else they wouldn't be mystery
events now would they? To calm your fears, as well as our insurance company's,
the special tests will not involve anything too dangerous or overly difficult. However,
you and your teammates will be tested both physically and mentally, but most of all,
your ability to work together as a team will be the key to success. The special
tests are typically team building exercises such as wall climbs, puzzles, balance tests
and the like. Remember, the emphasis will be on teamwork rather than superior strength
or athleticism.
Q: Will swimming be involved?
A: No. Although a short swim was considered, we will
not have a swimming section for this year's race.
Q: What do we need to bring?
A: Assuming that your team will not be supplying their own boat, paddles and pfds,
each team member must bring their own bicycle and approved bicycle helmet. Any
bicycle or helmet deemed unsafe by the race officials will not be allowed in the
race. Although many adventure races require teams to be self sufficient, there will
be water and other yet-to-be-determined food and beverages available at key areas. However, we strongly suggest that each team member bring their own
fluid supply that can be carried during the race (i.e., water bottle, hydrapak, etc.).
Q: What kind of boats will be supplied?
A: The boats that will be supplied for the race will be a variety of flat-water
open canoes. Since the sizes, materials and weights will vary, the race officials
will designate the "best" boats for the teams that registered the earliest. So get
those registrations in soon. Paddles and lifejackets (pfds) will also vary in
quality and comfort. Once again, the best items will go to the early birds. If you want
to bring your own boat and/or paddles and pfds you are more than welcome. Please
check next to the "Will Supply Own Canoe?" field on the registration form if you plan to
do so. Any flat-water open canoe will be allowed. Paddles are up to you, but pfds must
be Coast Guard approved. Please note that all three team members will have to be in
the canoe for the entire paddling leg so make sure everybody fits safely. If a boat is deemed
unsafe by the race officials then it will not be allowed in the race.<
Q: Is there an age requirement?
A: Yes. You have to be at least 16 years old on the day of the race. Team
members may be required to present a valid ID proving their age if deemed necessary by
the race officials.
