TWRA Lands

Special Regulations:

  • Small game, big game, and waterfowl.
  • No motorized vehicles outside parking areas.
  • Area closed after sunset except for opossum and raccoon hunters.
  • Trespass by non-hunters prohibited on hunt days (last weekend in August to the last day of January).
  • Hunting allowed on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, except during waterfowl season.
  • Closed to quail hunting.
  • Seasons are the same as statewide seasons, except where noted.
  • All hunting ends January 31, except for spring squirrel and spring turkey.
  • Legal weapons: shotgun with #4 shot or smaller, and archery.
  • Waterfowl hunting restricted to use of shotguns loaded with BBB shot or smaller.

Deer: Archery equipment only. Archers must comply with the big game hunter orange requirements during the statewide deer gun or muzzleloader hunts. Deer count toward statewide bag.

Dove: September 1 and every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday of the statewide dove season. Noon until sunset only. No dove hunters or dove hunting equipment on dove fields prior to 7:00 a.m. on opening day of the first segment of dove season.

Opossum: Two opossums per person per night. Hunting from sunset to sunrise only.

Rabbit: Bag limit is 3 per person per day.

Raccoon: Two raccoon per person per night. Hunting from sunset to sunrise only.

Turkey: Hunting ends at noon each day. Turkey counts toward statewide bag.

Waterfowl hunting: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and the first and last day of the statewide season, including the youth waterfowl season. Hunting ends at noon each day, including the youth waterfowl season. Hunting from temporary blinds only. No blinds, blind materials, boats, or decoys may be left overnight.

Dog training: September 1-January 31, except closed to training during the late duck season.

Directions

Hixson Tract

From I-75, go north on Hwy. 153 and cross the Chickamauga Dam. Continue past the Super Walmart. At the first traffic light past Walmart, turn right on Grubb Road. Take the first road to the left (Lower Mill Road). Take Lower Mill Road across the railroad tracks. Turn left at the last road on the left before crossing the creek.

Rogers Tract

From the Chickamauga Dam go west on Hwy. 153. Turn right onto Hixson Pike (Rd. 319); go 1.5 miles and turn left onto Middle Valley Rd. Go 0.4 mile and turn left onto Lower Mill Road. Go 0.2 mile to the Rogers Tract on the left at the sign.

Sutton Tract

Take Hixson Pike North out of downtown Chattanooga. Stay on Hixson Pike for about 8 miles. Turn left onto Middle Valley Road, and immediately turn left again onto Old Hixson Pike. Just past Hixson Middle School, turn left into the Sutton Tract.

Thrasher Bottoms

Cross Chickamauga Dam on Hwy. 153. Continue 5 miles, then turn right onto US 127 Corridor J. Go 2 miles to Thrasher Pike Exit. Park in the graveled area at the top of the exit ramp. Walk-in only.

Vandergriff Tract

From I-75, go north on Hwy 153; cross Chickamauga Dam. Continue past the Super Walmart. Turn right at first traffic light past Walmart onto Grubb road. Follow Grubb Road until it bears 90 degrees right. Go straight through the curve and turn left on Mill Road. Go 300 yards on Mill Road; cross railroad tracks and turn right. Park behind the white block building.

Varner Tract

From I-75 go north on Hwy. 153 and cross Chickamauga Dam. Go to the 2nd red light and turn right onto Hamill Road. Cross N. Chickamauga Creek and turn left on Cassandra Smith Road. Go approximately 5/8 mile and turn between the yellow/brown boundary stakes past an old dairy farm. Park in the gravel area at the end of the road.

Patton Unit – Sequatchie County

Regulations:

  • All motorized vehicles must stay on the main road while driving through the area.
  • Possession of alcoholic beverages is prohibited.
  • Big game, small game, trapping, and dog training are allowed.
  • Same as statewide seasons, except as noted.
  • Open with statewide seasons.
  • Closed to quail.

Directions

From downtown Chattanooga, take 27-N. Stay on 27-N for about 15 miles. Take the Thrasher Pike exit, and turn left off the exit ramp onto Thrasher Pike. Take a right onto Dayton Pike. After about ½ mile, turn left onto Montlake Road, and take Montlake Road to the top of Mowbray Mountain. At the top of the mountain, turn left onto Poe Road. Stay on Poe Road for about 6.5 miles then turn left onto Grant Road. After about ½ mile, turn left onto Barker Camp Road. Go 1.8 miles, and veer right onto Walnut Road. This turns into Cain Creek Road. Veer right onto Grandview, which runs through the Patton Unit.

Directions

Located 15 miles north of Chattanooga. From Hwy. 27 take the Dayton Pike exit and turn left. Proceed about 1 mile to Roberts Mill Road and take a left. Take Roberts Mill Road up Walden’s Ridge. At the top of the plateau, veer right onto Hixson Springs Road. After about 1 mile, turn left into the trailhead at the intersection of Hixson Springs Road and Standing Rock Road.

Fishing

Thrasher Bottoms

Trout is currently stocked at TWRA’s Thrasher Bottoms Tract. However, stocking is expected to end in the near future.

If fishing by boat, fishing is allowed anywhere on the creek. However, access is only allowed off of public land.

If fishing on foot, fishing is only allowed on public land.
