On Saturday, April 27th, 2002, the inaugural Greenway Challenge Adventure Race attracted 36 teams of 3 to the North Chickamauga Creek Greenway Farm in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The teams started off with six miles of mountain biking along the Greenway trails. This cycling leg was broken up in the middle by a special test where teams had to construct a thirty piece puzzle of the race logo before continuing. After dismounting their bikes they carried their canoes down to the North Chickamauga Creek for a three mile paddling section taking them from one end of the Greenway Farm to the other. After carrying their canoes up to the parking lot they were confronted with another special test. The "team pushup" required all three team members to perform three pushups simultaneously while only one team members feet touched the ground.

After shaking off their sea legs they started back on foot along the Greenway trails for four miles of running. They were soon confronted with the very steep trails of the TVA Small Wild Area, also known as the "Boy Scout Trail". This was followed by another climb up to the top of the rock quarry and into the "ropes course" area of the Greenway. There, teams had to successfully complete several balance and ropes elements made more difficult by wobbly legs from hours of adventure racing at that point. This was followed by an eleven foot wall climb that challenged teams to work together in order to summit. Racers were then given some relief as they wound their way downhill back to the grass field where the race began.

With the finish line just a few feet away racers were confronted with the last and most daunting of the special tests, the "slippery wall". The twelve foot angled wall required teams to work together as they had done during the previous wall climb. However, another variable was thrown into the equation as the wall was lathered down with a mixture of water and dishwashing liquid making for a slippery mess. Spectators delighted in the failed attempts as racers slid back down the wall and readied themselves for another assault. Racers soon had their revenge as team after team crossed the finish line in the allotted time.
